Dry scalp, FAQs
Whats the difference between dandruff and dry scalp?
While dandruff is one of the many things that can cause dry scalp, theyre not the same thing.
Treating a dry, itchy scalp as if its dandruff wont necessarily helpand could possibly make it worse.

Ill never brush, wash, or dry my hair the same way again.
What causes a dry scalp?
It all depends on your hair pop in.
Psoriasis also commonly contributes to scalp itching, Dr. Robinson says.
Dr. Robinson also points to seasonal changes as a common culprit.
So you better check that youre cleansing your scalp properlysomething thats surprisingly easier said than done.

I always have a go at tie scalp care back to skin care, Reavey explains.
Can you imagine layering on makeup and leaving it on your skin for three-plus days without washing it?
The answer is probably no, since it would leave your skin more prone to breakouts and extremely dry.
The same goes for your scalp.
Dr. Robinson concurs, adding: Overwashing or underwashingcan each lead to dryness or itching.
Here’s what experts say you should do instead.

Products that are heavy in sulfates and surfactants and some fragrances can all cause dry scalp, Reavey explains.
Be sure to use a sulfate-free shampoo, she says.
Also, look at the ingredients in your hair-styling products, and avoid alcohols that may be drying.

However, not all alcohols are badand this is where you better be educated.
Dr. Rubin also suggests avoiding alcohols like ethanol, SD alcohol, propanol, and isopropyl alcohol.
(Remember the makeup metaphor?)

Sometimes dry shampoo doesn’t cut it.
As for what to do instead of reaching for the dry shampoo?
But again, thats not an everyday kind of thing.

It can also be beneficial toincrease your water intake, according to Reavey.
This can also help assuage psoriasis symptoms until you see a pro (more on that below).
Dr. Palm recommends products that are rich in hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and vitamins.

Such is the case if you think you havepsoriasisas well.
To hold you over until your appointment, however, shampoo containing salicylic acid should help ease the symptoms.
