Weve all known the feeling of losing a best friend or getting out of a toxic relationship.

And it’s these emotions that form the heartbeat of Lauren Spencer Smith’s music.

In late 2021, Spencer Smith found her firstviral successon TikTok with her heartbreaking ballad Fingers Crossed.

Every time we write a song, it’s always a reflection of a personal experience, she says.

So there’s this kind of metaphor with calling itMirror.

The 15-track album holds up a mirror to toxic relationships, best-friend breakups, and finding growth through pain.

I realized that the story of the album was just the story of my life, Spencer Smith says.

It’s getting over the breakup, learning things about yourself, and learning how to heal again.

A big part of healing is songwriting.

I think there are different levels to love.

I think life is just meant to be lived.

Best Friend Breakup

This song came as a later addition to the album.

What intrigues me about best-friend breakups is how unique they are.

When we’re in the studio, emotions like sadness and anger often drive our music.

But when we wrote this song, it came from a place of years having passed.

So I love not feeling angry or sad toward someone when I listen to the song.

The song is about losing a best friend without even realizing it’s a breakup.

There were no explosive arguments, just a gradual drift aparta common experience post-high-school or -college.

Don’t get me wrong: Best-friend breakups hurt more than romantic breakups.

It gives big futuristic energy.

Ultimately, we felt the album didn’t have a true love song, so we wrote one.

It’s unbelievable how many proposals we’ve had on the tour.

Flowers

Flowers serves as a juxtaposition and a self-discovery journey.

Now I believe things should be discussed and done so respectfully.

You’re owed an explanation.

You don’t always have to say sorry first.

I now have two main boundaries: good communication and knowing that my feelings are always valid.

When you first go through a breakup, you feel like everything is the other person’s fault.

But the further you’re removed from it, the more you realize it’s complex.

28

28 is about my dad dating a 28-year-old.

So the whole song is not about the age; it’s about the lie.

It’s my way of reasserting that my feelings are valid.

My fans sing 28 the loudest because they understand its significance to me and its deeper meaning.

That’s why I perform it with extra passion.

And naturally, those who relate to it sing even louder.

Someone You Loved

I’ve sung this song for so many years now.

This was the second song I covered online when I was 14 or 15 that got many views.

And I’ve loved it more ever since.

I think it fits perfectly into the set.

It’s heartbreak, sad ballads.

That’s really the main theme that goes on.
