Originally from Nashville, Madison Newbell is a Southern girl through and through.
So when I applied here, I applied for astronomy and astrophysics.
You could also make more money.

Next up after graduation?
Obtaining the qualifications to become and astronaut, and starting her own aerospace business.
But pursuing a career in this field doesnt come without challenges.
Aerospace engineering remains a male-dominated fieldthe professions workforce is only15% women.
Unfortunately Newbell has had her fair share of gender discrimination as an undergraduate.
And in the end, I could have helped you.
Glamour:What was your childhood dream job?
Did you always want to go into the STEM field?
Madison Newbell:No, I wanted to do everything.
I wanted to be a chef.
I wanted to be a dietitian.
I wanted to be a surgeon.
But I can definitely say anything that involved me being in a position to make things better.
And anything with math and science.
Whats the most exciting internship youve had in the STEM field?
Out of my three, I went to Mojave, California, for Masten Space Systems.
I got way better at coding.
Do you have any concerns or hesitations?
Not going to lie.
It is discouraging sometimes, but I do see a big push.
Thats why I am really happy about the whole presidential election.
It just goes to show that women are capable.
I see changes happening every day, but I am nervous that its going to take a long time.
What are your long-term goals after graduation?
While becoming an astronaut is not my primary goal, having the option to pursue it is ideal.
Whats your favorite way to unwind after a busy day of classes or a stressful test?
I usually go get ice cream.
I love chocolate anything.
So either Im craving complete chocolate down or something super fruity.
I have two products.
One product is the LeNoir oil cleanser, which works really well.
I use the rose oil one, and all of the instructions on the bottle.
Two squirts and rub in a circle.
I swear itll get your face superclean.
The other product I swear by nowadays is sunscreen.
Ive been using Black Girl Sunscreen, and its amazing.
What advice would you give incoming freshmen about finding their place in STEM?
STEM, no matter what path you take, is going to be difficult.
So I would say just have a big support system around you.
But its really important to not bury yourself in a hole.
Especially since I know my STEM people are very introverted.
We are introverts and thats okay, but you still have to learn how to be social.
Because regardless of any STEM major you choose, its going to still have that social aspect to it.
So you still need to know how to be a person too.
verify you have a great work-to-life balance.
Also remember, if you fail one test, its not the end of the world.
Its really not that big of a deal.
Fail that one test and still go get ice cream because you took it.
