It’s the kind of performance that wins an Emmy.

It’s the reason you hire Tom Pelphrey.

Life feels a little bit like a fairy tale, he says.

Glamour: How did you came to play Don Crowder onLove & Death?

They want you to read a few scripts.

So they sent the first four, which I read all in a row.

I couldn’t put them down.

I thought the writing was incredible, and I’d never heard of this story before.

And then to realize that everything David had written was true?

Other than private conversations, he really didn’t embellish anything.

And yet your biggest episodes arent until the final three.

But yeah…and there was even a lot less Don the first time I read it.

You don’t really get that from the first four, so I took him at his word.

It was really exciting and interesting.

Tell me something I dont know about Don.

How would you describe him?

I do have a bit of a man crush on him.

He was larger than life, a true Texan.

I think of Donand in no way is the comparison literalbut I think of my father.

I just think of certain men of that generation who were athletic and tough and built a certain way.

The more I read about him, the more I was really taken with his story.

He was a small guy.

He got picked on a lot, so he was fistfighting all the time when he was a kid.

So Don takes on her case having never tried a criminal case.

It really is absolutely fascinating when you think about it.

Tell me more about Dons love of taxidermy.

I believe I saw an armadillo in his glass desk?

That desk was wild.

I love that you saw the armadillo.

That fucking desk was a menagerie of dead things.

From the tiniest to the armadillo.

Because I just want a camera to fully get in.

I don’t know if Don Crowder, the actual man, had that much taxidermy.

Hes a real-life Ken doll at the pool.

Oh yes, the tanning.

So I got to talk to Robert on the phone, and then he came to set.

He got to tell me a lot of personal stories, anecdotes about Don.

Robert said Don was very particular about his hair, his tan, and his fitness.

So I took it to heart.

Did you get frequent spray tans then?

You bet I did.

So I knew that way wasn’t going to work.

We started doing full body spray tans twice a week.

I liked the way it looks, but everything else about it is a nightmare.

My sheets were disgusting.

This is before I met Kaley, thankfully, so she didn’t have to deal with it.

Tell me something I dont know about your first day on the set ofLove & Death.

The singing in the choirI couldn’t stop laughing at Patrick Fugit, who plays Pat Montgomery.

Jesse Plemons was kind of looking around the room like a mannequin at a store.

And then Patrick was really somehow perfectly off the beat, no matter what he was doing.

Tell me something I don’t know about working with Elizabeth Olsen.

I call her the machine.

That was my nickname for her.

Lizzie is one of, if not the most prepared actors I’ve ever worked with.

Her level of focus and preparation is truly impressive.

That is really incredible and almost never happens.

It was super impressive.

Speaking of impressive, whats the ballsiest thing youve ever done to land an audition or a job?

which is borderline creepy.

You ever hear one of those stories and you’re like, What if that didn’t go well?

You know what I mean?

That’s the end of your career.

I felt good about it.

They couldn’t tell me why.

I was like, If I suck or if he…whatever.

But is that the case?

They said, No, they thought you were great.

So you broke into his house.

And crashed his barbecue.

I said, Is there any way that David would see me on a Saturday?

It was the only time I could go.

Surprisingly, and thankfully, David said yes.

I finished filmingOzarkabout 3 a.m. on a Friday night/Saturday morning.

We read the scenes in person and it worked out.

I was proud of that.

I was like, You know what?

This is a David Fincher movie.

I’m going to exhaust all my options.

So someone broke into your house and had a barbecue?

I really like you bringing this back full circle.

Let’s just say you get mailed things at the studio.

Valentine’s Day gifts.

We’ll say that.

Tell me something I don’t know about something your partner does for you that you love.

That is the greatest gift, truly, I’ve ever forgotten.

And that makes me want to be really good at giving that gift back every day.

It’s been incredible.

Life feels a little bit like a fairy tale.

We just celebrated a year together and everything has changed.

It’s just like, this is what happens now and this is what happens next.

And now we have a beautiful daughter.

Now youre making me emotional!

Tell me something I dont know about parenthoodwhat has been the most surprising or unexpected thing?

In a pleasant way, it feels intuitive.

I don’t know that I expected that.

You know what youre doing.

Yeah, I was in.

I’m all the way in.

I didn’t expect how intuitive a lot of it would feel like.

I’m like, Oh yeah, she’s mine too.

It’s half of me.

That part has been the coolest surprise.

You have quite a few tattoos.

Tell me something I don’t know about one of them.

My first tattoo ever is on my back, and it’s a blue moon.

Turns out they were really good at it.

I would go see his shows, and it was a blast.

I once said to him, What made you want to do this?

and he said, I’ve always loved oldies and always loved to sing.

And seeing you succeed with the thing that you love made me want to sing.

I was 23 and on the soap at the time, and I was so moved by that.

Oh, I love that.

What a great tribute.

Yeah, that time was special.

No, I can’t say I’m that negative.

That’s a good thing to remember.

I love Eckhart Tolle.

His book kind of changed my life, and he points that out.

Have you ever experienced that in your life?

I think sometimes we are always energetically anticipating the worst possible outcome when we have fears about uncertain things.
